Since most of the cultivated flowering plants have inadequate keeping quality when grown with traditionally high P and especially when chemically growth regulated we also studied the effect of reduced P availability on the post-production stress tolerance of a number of different plant species.
Reduced P availability improves the keeping quality in all species tested by delaying floral senescence and reducing root dieback.
Figure 5. Postharvest studies showed that low P availability during production improved the keeping quality of Pentas lanceolata. The plant on the right was grown with standard high P and growth regulated with cycocel (CCC).
